The United Way Day of Action mobilizes volunteers on June 21, the day with the longest period of daylight, and encourages individuals to stand up for themselves, their friends, the community, and the country to pledge to change the course of our future.
Last year on Day of Action, United Way Worldwide launched a three year goal to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to help improve the academic success of young people across America.
Locally, the United Way of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks & Area will focus its attention on early childhood education, literacy and childhood hunger.
United Way board members and volunteers will assist St. Joseph’s Social Care with its summer food program for youth, handing out free lunches and books at local parks and recreation centers from 11:45am-1:15pm.
Day of Action locations include:
-University Park (warming house)
-LaGrave Learning Center (832 4th Ave. S.)
-Sherlock Park (shelter by pool)
Volunteers will also pay a special visit to the Y Family Center and United Day Nursery to read to children during morning (9:00am) and afternoon (3:00pm) story time.
Free books provided by the Grand Forks Foundation for Education.
