This year marks the 63rd Anniversary of the National Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, which United Way coordinates locally.
Today through Dec. 3 we will be collecting donations of new, unwrapped toys. The toys will then be distributed to needy children in the Grand Forks community ranging in age from 0 to 12 years.
In 2009, 199 families with 535 children qualified for the program. Families were referred by United Way partner agencies, Head Start, Grand Forks County Social Services or Grand Forks Public Schools.
Local charitable organizations that received toys in 2009 included: Prairie Harvest Foundation, Northlands Rescue Mission, Community Violence Intervention Center, St Vincent de Paul, and the YMCA.
