Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has arrived in Grand Forks!

The United Way of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks & Area wants you to book your child a ticket to the Imagination Library.

Education is the cornerstone of individual and community success. Children learn best in loving, nuturing relationships and through everyday experiences. Whether children are at home, with relatives or friends, or in childcare the quality of their early experiences is key to later school success.

That is why United Way has partnered with Altru Health System and the Grand Forks Foundation for Education to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program to the Greater Grand Forks Area.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library will help you read with your child. Every child will have books of their very own, at no cost to you, thanks to the United Way of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks & Area.

Each month a new book will be mailed in your child’s name directly to your home until he/she turns five years old as long as you remain a resident of Grand Forks County or  the City of East Grand Forks.

Who is Eligible?

Toys for Tots 2011 – Results

2011 marks the 64th Anniversary of the National Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, which United Way coordinates locally.

This year, we distributed toys to 287 families with 647 children!

Families were referred by United Way partner agencies, Head Start, Grand Forks County Social Services or Grand Forks/East Grand Forks Public Schools.

THANK YOU

To all those in the community who contributed to the drive via toy donations, as well as through monetary donations.

Ben Franklin School, Greater Grand Forks Young Professionals, Hamilton Family Foundation, Red Hat Society, Vaaler Insurance, Hunting Fever Games, Henningeson Storage, TSA, L.I.S.T.E.N. Center, Lions Club, Kay Jewelers, Anita Geffre, and dozens of anonymous donors.

To the area businesses who served as Toys For Tots collection sites.
Americash, Columbia Mall, Dakota Pediatric Dentistry, Old Navy, Payday Express, Tuffy Auto Service Center and the UND Alumni Association & Foundation.

To all the volunteers who assisted us with our Toys For Tots distribution.
RSVP+, Grand Forks Air Force Base, Alerus Center, Kohl’s, Jill Fritel, Deb Johnson, and members of the community.

Finally, a very special thank you to Troy at Fed Ex, WDAZ, Whalen’s Moving & Storage, Rydell Auto Center, Bill and Scott at Columbia Mall, Judi Paukert and staff of Xcel Energy, and Kyle Deitz.

You all have made the holidays very special for hundreds of families and children in the Grand Forks community.

Share-A-Tree

Target stores across the country celebrated the holiday season by donating 2,790 decorated holiday trees to United Ways as part of the Target Share-A-Tree program.

“Performing even a single act of kindness is an important step toward improving lives, and strengthening and supporting communities,” said United Way President and CEO Brian Gallagher. “For more than 20 years, United Way has been proud to partner with Target to give lift to this very special program and bring holiday cheer to families everywhere.”

The Super Target store in Grand Forks donated trees to the Salvation Army and Global Friends Coalition.

United Way Seeking Toy Donations

The United Way of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and Area is once again the local coordinator for the National Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. This year the requests to be included in the program have nearly doubled from the previous year.

“Last year we served 196 families with 479 children,” said United Way President, Pat Berger.  “This year we have applications from 352 families with 747 children. The application deadline has passed and unfortunately we now have a number of families already on a waiting list. It will depend on the number of toys that are collected as to whether we are able to serve these families.”

The toy collection process has begun and will continue through Wednesday, December 7.  A number of local businesses have volunteered to be a collection point for donations.  These include:

Americash
Columbia Mall
Dakota Pediatric Dentistry
Old Navy
Tuffy Auto Service Center
UND Alumni Association & Foundtion

Donations may also be dropped off at the United Way office
1407 24th Ave. S, Suite E, Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Giving Thanks

We are thankful for:

*The Grand Forks community: Year after year we receive a great amount of support from members of the community. Without the generous donations made through workplace and Community Builders campaigns, as well as through our direct service programs ‘Undies Sundays’ and ‘Toys for Tots,’ we would not be able to continue working to advance the common good.

*Our volunteers: Every year, dozens of volunteers assist us in preparing for and running our campaign. Without their generous donation of time and energy, our small staff would not be able to run a successful campaign. Volunteers help keep costs low so that we may channel more funds into the community.

*Our partner agencies: The agencies we fund provide much needed relief to individuals and families in need in the community. They offer food, clothing, and shelter, as well as a variety of service and support programs. The work done by these agencies has a great impact on the Grand Forks community and makes life a little easier for those who may be struggling.

*Area businesses:
Dozens of businesses support United Way by conducting workplace campaigns to allow employees to donate to us and our partner agencies.

Every year, a handful of businesses step up to the plate and decide to be a Campaign Pacesetter. This year’s Pacesetters were: Canad Inns Destination Center, Greater Grand Forks Senior Center, Nodak Rural Electric, One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, Thompson Insurance, and United Valley Bank. Together, the 2011 Pacesetters increased contributions 47% and raised $15,894 for United Way.

We also extend a warm thank you to Xcel Energy for sponsoring our 2011 Million Dollar Mixer.

And last, but not least,

*Our Board of Directors: The local business professionals who sit on our Board of Directors, Campaign Cabinet, and Executive Council are an integral part of our organization. They not only assist us in setting goals for the future, they also work to help us achieve those goals by raising awareness for United Way and supporting the campaign any way they can. They also sit on allocation committees and on our Education, Income & Health task forces.

Judi Paukert, Manager of Community Relations at Xcel Energy, served as our 2011 Campaign Chair and did a wonderful job! We are very thankful for the hard work and dedication Judi put into this year’s fundraising campaign. She assisted with CEO meetings, attended events, and gave dozens of presentations on behalf of United Way.

The staff of the United Way of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks & Area thanks you for your continued support of our organization and we wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
